If Alipay is not working after you arrive in Shanghai, stop repeated retries, move to a staffed counter, and ask which displayed international-card networks or RMB cash options are accepted. Keep an official taxi route and your hotel address offline so one payment failure does not block the whole first night.

60-second triage at PVG or SHA.

This is for the moment when you have luggage, jet lag, and a payment app that is not behaving. The goal is not to fix everything. The goal is to reach the hotel safely.

Try one clean backup.

Try a different linked card or the other payment app once. Read any bank, identity, or network error once; do not make random settings changes or keep retrying at the counter.

Switch to a staffed place.

Use an airport information desk, official taxi dispatcher, larger chain merchant, hotel front desk, or bank/ATM. Do not let a stranger handle passwords or payment PINs.

Choose a route that does not depend on app payment.

If app payment remains uncertain, avoid DiDi pickup experiments. Use official taxi queue with Chinese hotel card, hotel transfer, or a staffed transport counter.

Derived first-night rule: If it is late, raining, you have heavy luggage, or data is unstable, the official taxi queue plus a verified Chinese hotel card is usually the lower-dependency fallback. This is a conservative product rule, not an airport requirement.

If payment fails at your first meal.

Do not turn your first meal into a payment troubleshooting session. Keep the meal boring, staffed, and close to the hotel until payment is stable.

Do this

  • Try the other app or another linked card once.
  • Ask whether international-card QR payment, cash, or foreign card is possible.
  • Switch to a larger chain, hotel restaurant, mall food court, or convenience store.
  • If still stuck, return to the hotel desk and solve payment on Wi-Fi.

Do not do this

  • Do not keep retrying until the app or bank locks you out.
  • Do not hand over your unlocked phone with payment screens open unless you can watch closely.
  • Do not share CVV, payment PIN, password, or full card details.
  • Do not choose a QR-only, waitlist-only, Chinese-phone-number restaurant while payment is red.

The strongest setup is not "Alipay will definitely work." The strongest setup is "I can still reach the hotel if Alipay does not work."

  • Follow the current official Alipay setup guidance and complete any requested verification before travel.

  • Use two cards from different banks if possible.
  • Start or finish identity verification before travel if the app requests it.
  • Notify your bank if it commonly blocks foreign online or QR transactions.
  • Save hotel Chinese name, address, phone, and booking screenshot offline.
  • Prepare an airport ATM or RMB-cash fallback; do not assume every merchant accepts your foreign card or has change.
